Owen Gleiberman of Variety wrote that "Wonka would be the squarest massive-scale Hollywood musical in many years" like a "enjoyment, rousing, impeccably staged, jaw-droppingly previous-fashioned musical prequel into the famous Roald Dahl tale", but "it may have been an excellent more substantial strike had it been rather less sanded off for kids".[
